Menažerija is an ode to consumerism, a play on populism and the idealisation of pop culture, and a highly relevant reflection on the fleetingness of society’s collective train of thought, which has long since been floating on lost ideals. Menažerija is an innocent joke about the reconciliation of the present-day individual with the self-created pointlessness of existence.

The works of Iris Pokovec are in a constant discourse between the poles of playful glorification and deep cynicism towards contemporary consumer pop culture. On the one hand, they sing praise to the poetics of the American Dream and romanticise the individual’s attitude towards infinite possibilities, unlimited choice and instant gratification, while on the other, they offer themselves as tools for meditation on the expression and, above all, consequences of such mass-produced and over-communicated promises, aimed at slowly changing the core principles and desires of contemporary society.

The Contemporary Curiosities and Consumer Plastics, which Menažerija produces under its own art brand, are mainly created in classical painting and graphic media. Colourful and playful, they preserve the simplicity of form while following the principles of visual communication of popular brands. They strive to seize and adapt the instruments of marketing, branding and PR to show the inseparable nature of the collective cognitive dissonance of contemporary existentialism. Our needs have become insatiable; not quickly, but immediately, simple isn’t enough anymore, it has to be automatic, and above all, it should not only be affordable but permanently discounted, preferably accompanied by a gift with every purchase.

These absurdities, which for more than half a century have slowly and seemingly inextricably shaped our basic expectations of life, are portrayed by the artist with a unique sense of humour, combining practical jokes and an exaggerated literalism of communication. Her production is an accurate reflection of the popular nihilism of today, in which everything that is meta has become synonymous with being good, in which the idea of entertainment is completely dislocated from reality and built on singing praises to the banality of existence, messages without a message, and in which virtue has been almost completely supplanted by value.

The artist’s works are direct, purged of all unnecessary forms, to the point where they place the viewer in the context of playing with the integral idea of consumption itself. Agency for its own sake, set as the ultimate solution to the growing abyss of constant dissatisfaction, the need to actualise one’s own essence and suppress any collective existential doubts with superficial tools whose generalising nature is aimed at appeasing as many individuals as possible – at any price – really only ever goes so deep that the void is never filled.

The art brand under which she creates brings this idea to a logical conclusion. The complete removal of the person – but not the persona – from the act of creation is a gesture that clearly shows the insignificance and even inferiority of the individual in today’s world, where trust is built with the means and tools of personal interaction. But unlike personal interactions between real people, brands themselves have now descended from the ideological and abstract realm and actualised themselves into human existence as our equals. Previously mere sets of ideas, expectations and principles, now transformed and put into practice amongst the living. However, like all gods who have ever crossed the threshold of the ethereal, they have placed themselves outside and more importantly above all mortal hierarchical structures and established a complete dictatorship based on an indescribable superiority over individuals and even states with smiling, almost-human faces and immortal, metaphysical bodies.

Eau de Toilet, 2019

The artwork Eau de Toilet (Toilet Water) was created as a prototype in 2019 as a limited edition of 5 originals.

Crafted from only premium ingredients, including fresh toilet water and vitrex (glass cleaner), which also gives the perfume its characteristic purple color. With its remarkably intrusive scent of synthetic lavender, it helps you scape into the world of lost Saturday mornings, scrubbing bathroom surfaces in the company of cleaning products.

The luxurious antique bottle with accompanying gold atomizer, a masterpiece of Chinese craftsmanship, adds a particularly sophisticated flair to the work of art.

Net volume 80 ml.

WARNING
According to the ingredient of the artwork, i.e. vitrex cleanser, which contains the substances 5-Chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (C4H4ClNOS) and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (C4H5NOS), the artist warns that ingestion of the artwork is hazardous to health or poisonous if ingested, may cause allergic reactions to the skin or severe skin burns, may damage your eyes and is toxic if in contact with the skin. Do not use the artwork and avoid any application or contact with the contents of the artwork and your body, do not inhale, and keep out of the reach of children.

Yellow Snow, 2020

Yellow Snow is a painting that is part of Menažerija’s Christmas Art collection. Since we all know what yellow snow is, I probably don’t need to go into detail about it. All I can say is that the starting point for this work was the moment of every winter when you look out of the window and see the snow falling for the first time, and it’s just such a magical and special moment – until you venture into this winter idyll and find that the beautiful white blanket of snow has already been desecrated in some places and has become … yellow snow. The work is a humorous reminder that things are always different when we observe them from a distance than when we see them up close. And romanticising always happens from a distance.

Measurements: height 71 cm x width 101 cm x depth 3 cm.
The medium is acrylic paint on canvas. Framed in a yellow-painted wood frame.

Christmas Pickle, 2020

Christmas Pickle is part of Menažerija’s Christmas Art collection.
The tradition of the Christmas pickle decoration is said to come from Germany, where it is hidden on the Christmas tree amid other decorations. The child who finds it first receives an additional gift that year.
Menažerija’s adaptation of the pickle-shaped decoration is a Christmas pop curiosity, which places the whole idea of the pickle as a Christmas decoration (probably most unusual and exotic to us) under a glass bell jar so that the mysterious specimen can be observed more closely.
Measurements: height 20 cm x width 10 cm x depth 10 cm.
The mediums are wood, glass, brass, PLA plastic, synthetic resin and engraved brass plate.
Edition of 6.
The work Christmas Pickle was made in collaboration with the International Centre of Graphic Arts.

Nose Fondler, 2020

Nose Fondler is part of Menažerija’s Curiosities collection and a prototype of a trendy accessory for the thorough and efficient fondling of your nose. It is a conditionally useful work of art that allows you to pick your nose in a much more prestigious and regal manner.
*COVID-19 warning*
Nose Fondler was created as a prototype before the COVID-19 pandemic and was already at that time intended as a fun curiosity and not as a real nose fondler.
In accordance with the above, I most definitely and absolutely dissuade you from using it to discover its nasal fondling functions at this time.

Measurements: height 20 cm x width 5,7 cm x depth 5,7 cm.
The mediums are acrylic paint on wood, rubber hand, engraved brass plate.
Edition of 6.
The work Nose Fondler was made in collaboration with the International Centre of Graphic Arts.

Red Dot, 2018

Red Dot is part of Menažerija’s $¥ƜβÖŁ$ collection. The work is a painting that illustates that red dot pasted on the wall next to the artwork, which causes a very big smile of gallerists and artists at sales exhibitions and fairs, as it means that the work has been sold.

So I’m presenting you the work, which is (in addition to the hammer explosion at auctions) a symbol of success in the art market.

Of course, I will also accompany your Red Dot Painting with a red dot sticker, which you can stick to the wall in addition to your new purcased work.

Measurements: height 41 cm x width 41 cm, depth 4 cm.
The medium is acrylic paint on canvas. Framed in a white-painted wood frame.

Antidepressive Painting, 2019

Antidepressive Painting is part of Menažerija’s $¥ƜβÖŁ$ collection and is a smiling image that can be interpreted in two ways: you can take it as a yellow and cheerful fun picture that brightens up your days and radiates vitamin D, or you can see it as a depiction of a plastic and hollow smile that occurs as a side effect of antidepressant therapy.

Measurements: height 101 cm x width 101 cm x depth 3 cm.
The medium is acrylic paint on canvas. Framed in a yellow-painted wood frame.

50% Off Painting, 2019

50% Off Painting is part of Menažerija’s $¥ƜβÖŁ$ collection. In our work as painters, we use motifs and themes that interest us. Motifs that we think are worth portraying. Sometimes even motifs that we think the public would like. And honesty is important here.
Art has always been a reflection of time and society. And the motif we like to see today is a discount sign.
50% Off Painting is a work of art that depicts and glorifies the idea of discount. And because it is true to what its motif promises, it is also a work that – regardless of its price – is and always will be reduced by 50 per cent.

The medium is acrylic paint on canvas. Framed in a yellow-painted wood frame.
